Reasons for Traveling Around the World
It would probably be over-stating things to say that “there are as many reasons to travel RTW as there are RTW travelers,” but it can definitely be said without a hint of hyperbole that there is more than one reason to take a round the world trip. And, unless your reason involves harming someone or something, there is also no such thing as a bad reason to travel around the world.
Many would argue that travel is not, in and of itself, therapy, and that taking a long-term trip in order to escape problems back home does not work. Those problems will still be there when you return, in most cases, so the latter tends to be true – but if your trip ends up being therapeutic then perhaps getting out of your everyday life was exactly what you needed.
Of course, there are much more (seemingly) mundane reasons for traveling, as well. Perhaps you want to go surfing in every country you visit. Maybe you’re on a quest to find the spiciest food. You might just be trying to travel by as many different means as you can, from zip-lining across a canyon in Costa Rica to the many kinds of unique transport in Asia.
Maybe you have travel fetishes, obsessions that lead you to collect matchbooks from bars or “do not disturb” signs from hotels. (Depending on your fetish, of course, investing in some cheap travel insurance before you go may not be a terrible idea.)
Your reasons for traveling are personal, and since you’re unlikely to ignore every other aspect of your surroundings than the reason you set out in the first place, whatever single reason gets you to book a plane ticket (international airfare or a cross-country flight) is a good one.
