A Vacation From Your Vacation

To the uninitiated, traveling the world sounds like an endless vacation, filled with exotic places, great food, beautiful settings, and comfort. If you’ve been around the world, or on an extended trip (and aren’t independently wealthy), then you’ll know that this just isn’t the case. Traveling can be hard work. A tough day of traveling can be harder than the toughest day at the office. Sometimes you need a break, and you shouldn’t be afraid to realize it while on the road.

It’s not just the challenging aspects of travel that can make you need to stop, re-energize, and get your bearings. When you do any one thing for an extended period of time, you can easily fall into a routine. This isn’t something you want to have happen when you are visiting some of the world’s most interesting places. Yet it happens all the same; you wake up, you see some sights, take your pictures, eat some food, move on; repeat in a new location, maybe even a new country.

Or maybe your budget can get you feeling like you need a vacation. For shoe-stringers, it can be really tough to manage the finances while traveling. When you’re at home planning your budget, it sounds easy enough. “I’ll just limit myself to a few beers a week,” or, “I don’t need to go rafting/bungee jumping/scuba diving while on this trip.” This sounds great when you’re crunching the numbers and deciding when to buy your return flight. But when you’re caught up in the moment, hanging out with new friends, seeing new things, and enjoying your trip to its fullest, the budget can go out the window.

Trying to travel too fast can be another main cause of stress or falling into a repeating pattern while traveling. Twenty countries in twenty-eight days? Sounded good at the time, and every place looked so enticing. The reality is a lot different than an itinerary on a piece of paper.

Basically, there’s lots of reasons you could fall into a rut, get a little stressed, or let things get too routine while traveling. The longer you are on the road the more likely it will happen. And when it does, don’t fight it; take a break. A vacation from your vacation, so to speak.

So what do you do during a vacation from your vacation? Anything you want. How long does it last? As long as you want it to. This is another reason why you should be flexible when planning your trip; you might need to take a breather and make sure you can still appreciate everything you’re seeing and doing.

When vacationing from your vacation, choose a comfortable spot, and just let yourself be. Don’t go sightseeing, don’t buy tickets, handle administrative stuff, or anything like that. Sit around and read a book. Watch TV or a movie if you want. Eat some Western food.

Just like when you’re at home working, you need a break every so often. Traveling is the same way, because you’re doing it every single day. Don’t forget that it can be overwhelming at times. When you need a break recognize it and take one. It will help you maximize the enjoyment from your trip by keeping things in perspective, and not letting the extraordinary become ordinary.
