Traveling Solo or In a Group: Pros and Cons (Part 1)

Friday, November 30th, 2007

One of the many questions you need to ask yourself before you start planning a trip around the world is a pretty simple, yet important one: who, if anyone, is coming with you? It is an age-old conundrum, the traveling companion issue. Some people are blessed with a companion who shares the same interests and passions, has the same idea of what makes a good traveling experience, has a similar budget, is patient, and knows when to stop talking. Friendships have been lost forever in the course of traveling; seemingly rock-solid relationships irreparably damaged, torn apart by the rigors of the road. So when you hit the road, will you bring a companion, or go it alone? (more…)

Picking the Right Travel Gear

Thursday, November 29th, 2007

There’s no shortage of gadgets and gear for sale with travelers in mind, in addition to the stuff that most of us use on a regular basis. So when you’re sorting out what to take and what to leave behind, how much of it are you going to bring along with you? My advice is to resist the temptation to overload on specialized equipment, and instead focus on bringing a few items that can handle multiple tasks for you. That way you have less clutter in your pack, and don’t carry around things that are only good for one specific use. (more…)

Keeping Your Belongings Secure

Wednesday, November 28th, 2007

When you are traveling, hopefully you don’t have too much in the way of valuables with you. The more you take, the more you can lose. You are, of course, going to need or want to bring some things that are somewhat precious: camera, iPod, phone, money, passport, credit cards. Keeping your stuff safe while traveling doesn’t have to stress you out, but it is something to think about. With a little thought and a simple strategy, you can focus on your travels and not worry about making it home with everything you started out with – minus most of your money, of course. (more…)

A Vacation From Your Vacation

Tuesday, November 27th, 2007

To the uninitiated, traveling the world sounds like an endless vacation, filled with exotic places, great food, beautiful settings, and comfort. If you’ve been around the world, or on an extended trip (and aren’t independently wealthy), then you’ll know that this just isn’t the case. Traveling can be hard work. A tough day of traveling can be harder than the toughest day at the office. Sometimes you need a break, and you shouldn’t be afraid to realize it while on the road. (more…)

RTW Frequently Asked Questions on Bootsnall

Monday, November 26th, 2007

Planning a trip around the world is something of an undertaking. When I started gearing up for my trip, not only did I have lots of questions, but my friends and family had questions too. Sometimes they’d ask a question about something I hadn’t thought of before, and I’d have to add it to the seemingly endless list of issues to address before leaving.

Fortunately we live in the Internet Age, and it’s much easier to plan a trip around the world than ever before. The folks over at Bootsnall have just put up an all-encompassing RTW FAQ (that stands for Frequently Asked Questions) that should address the majority of any issues facing someone planning a trip around the world. The Art of Traveling Virtually

Wednesday, November 21st, 2007

The beauty of the Internet is that you can go anywhere in the world without leaving your home. If you’re a fan of travel, then of course this is hardly a substitute for the real thing. However, if you’re looking to get some ideas on places to go, get a sense for a place before you go, or check out a place you have no intention of actually visiting, then travel videos on the internet can be a wonderful tool. If you like making your own videos, then displaying your videos online can be a great outlet for you to share your travels with friends and strangers alike. (more…)

Holidays Abroad

Monday, November 19th, 2007

If you are gone for a long enough time, you will invariably miss some things at home. During my one year odyssey, I missed a couple of weddings, the winter holiday season, the 4th of July (my favorite holiday), a big get together from college friends, and just about everything else. Missing out on things at home comes with the territory for the long term traveler. Of course, it’s hard to look at it like you are missing out when you are seeing and doing amazing things all over the world. When it comes to the holidays, though, it’s easy to get the blues, at least for a short time. Here’s how to conquer them. (more…)

Strange Currency

Friday, November 16th, 2007

As the world becomes a smaller place, traveling gets easier in a lot of ways. Sure, some places aren’t as untouched as they once were, and it gets harder and harder to find a way off the beaten path year after year. But some aspects of travel that were once difficult or inconvenient have become much better. One issue facing travelers that has become much more convenient in recent years has to do with money. Five Ways to Make Your iPod the Ultimate Travel Gadget

Thursday, November 15th, 2007

Probably the one piece of electronic equipment I always see people traveling with, other than a digital camera, is an iPod. It makes perfect sense, too; traveling has lots of down time, and what better way to keep yourself sane during those ridiculously long layovers and train journeys than by listening to some tunes. What you might not know is that if you’re bringing an iPod, or something similar, there’s a whole lot more you can do with it than just listening to music. (more…)
